Matcha Crème Brûlée Brownies
Description
These decadent brownies are infused with the bright, grassy flavor of matcha powder. The richness is balanced by a layer of caramelized sugar and crumbled matcha cookies on top.
Ingredients
For the brownies:
- 1 and 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter (12 tablespoons), plus more for greasing the pan
- 2 cups of sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 and 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of matcha powder (see note)
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
For the caramelized sugar:
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
For the crumbled cookies:
- 1 cup of matcha cookies, crushed into small pieces
Instructions
Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with butter and line it with parchment paper.
Make the brownies: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and matcha powder. Set aside.
Melt the chocolate: Melt the butter and sugar in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally.
Add the eggs: Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
Combine the mixtures: Add the flour mixture to the saucepan and stir until just combined.
Pour into the pan: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth out the top.
Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached.
Make the caramelized sugar: In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Place over low heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved.
Caramelize the sugar: Increase the heat to medium-high and cook, without stirring, for 5-7 minutes or until the sugar turns a deep amber color.
Top with caramelized sugar and crumbled cookies: Once the brownies have cooled slightly, sprinkle the caramelized sugar over the top and crumble the matcha cookies on top.
Note
Matcha powder can be found in most Asian grocery stores or online. Make sure to use high-quality matcha powder for the best flavor.
