Maple Bacon Cinnamon Rolls with Brown Sugar Crumble
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 1 cup warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the filling:
- 6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the brown sugar crumble:
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions:
To make the dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Stir to dissolve yeast, then let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add melted butter, eggs, and yeast mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-12 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
To make the filling:
- In a small bowl, mix together crumbled bacon, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Set aside to use later.
To assemble and bake the rolls:
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 1/4-inch thickness.
- Spread the maple bacon filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Roll up the dough tightly, starting from one of the long sides.
- Place the rolled dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam-side down.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
To make the brown sugar crumble:
- In a small bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, and salt.
- Add cold butter to dry ingredients and use a pastry blender or your fingers to work it into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in cinnamon.
- Set aside to use later.
To top with brown sugar crumble:
- Allow the rolls to cool for 5-10 minutes before topping with brown sugar crumble.
- Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the top of the rolls, making sure to cover the entire surface.
