Lemon-Ginger Crust

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp grated ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and grated ginger. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  4. To make the crust, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add the cold butter and use a pastry blender or your fingers to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in the lemon juice and grated ginger.
  6. Spread the crust mixture evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of ginger to your taste.
  • This crumble is perfect as a dessert or a snack, and it's also great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Variations:

To make this recipe more interesting, try adding some chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds work well) to the crust mixture. You can also substitute some of the granulated sugar with brown sugar for a deeper flavor.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Make sure to use fresh, crisp apples for the best results.
  • Don't overmix the crust mixture, or it will become tough.
  • If you're using a particularly sweet apple variety, reduce the amount of granulated sugar in the filling.
