  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

For the Apple Compote:

  • 2-3 apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or other firm variety)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Waffles:

  1. Preheat your waffle iron to medium-high heat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, and ground cinnamon.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. The batter should still be slightly lumpy.

Make the Cinnamon Swirl:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
  2. Add the softened butter to the sugar mixture and mix until crumbly.
  3. Beat in the egg yolk until smooth.
  4. Use this mixture as the topping for your waffles.

Make the Apple Compote:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the liquid has thickened, about 15-20 minutes.

Assemble and Serve:

  1. Cook waffles according to your waffle iron's instructions.
  2. Top each waffle with a dollop of whipped cream (see below).
  3. Spoon warm apple compote over the top of the whipped cream.
  4. Sprinkle confectioners' sugar over the top, if desired.

Make the Whipped Cream:

  1. In a medium bowl, whip heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  2. Gradually add granulated sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form.

Variations

  • Substitute chopped nuts or dried cranberries for added texture and flavor.
  • Use different types of milk, such as almond or soy milk, for a non-dairy version.
  • Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top of the whipped cream for extra flavor.
