Cinnamon Swirl Apple Tarts
Description
These individual apple tarts are a delightful twist on the classic crumble. A flaky pastry crust is topped with a mixture of tender apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon, then finished with a swirl of buttery dough.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 sticks (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
- 2-3 apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or other firm variety)
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
Instructions
Make the Pastry Dough
- In a large bowl, combine cold butter and granulated sugar.
- Add the beaten egg and mix until just combined.
- Sprinkle in cinnamon and salt, then mix to form a dough.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until it forms a ball.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Prepare the Apples
- In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples and brown sugar.
- Mix well to coat the apples evenly with sugar.
Assemble the Tarts
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled pastry dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out circles of dough using a cookie cutter or glass (about 3-4 inches in diameter).
- Spoon a few slices of apple onto one half of each circle.
- Fold the other half over to form a half-circle shape, pressing edges together with a fork to seal.
Brush with Egg Wash
- Beat an egg in a small bowl and mix with a tablespoon of water.
- Brush the tops of each tart with the egg wash, being careful not to let it drip onto the pastry crust.
Bake the Tarts
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown, then rotate and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Serve Warm
Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
