Cinnamon Swirl Apple Tarts

Flaky pastry tarts filled with sweet caramelized apples and a hint of cinnamon.

Cinnamon Swirl Apple Tarts

Description

These individual apple tarts are a delightful twist on the classic crumble. A flaky pastry crust is topped with a mixture of tender apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon, then finished with a swirl of buttery dough.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 sticks (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2-3 apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or other firm variety)
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar

Instructions

Make the Pastry Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine cold butter and granulated sugar.
  2. Add the beaten egg and mix until just combined.
  3. Sprinkle in cinnamon and salt, then mix to form a dough.
  4. Gradually add flour, mixing until it forms a ball.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Apples

  1. In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples and brown sugar.
  2. Mix well to coat the apples evenly with sugar.

Assemble the Tarts

  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled pastry dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Cut out circles of dough using a cookie cutter or glass (about 3-4 inches in diameter).
  3. Spoon a few slices of apple onto one half of each circle.
  4. Fold the other half over to form a half-circle shape, pressing edges together with a fork to seal.

Brush with Egg Wash

  1. Beat an egg in a small bowl and mix with a tablespoon of water.
  2. Brush the tops of each tart with the egg wash, being careful not to let it drip onto the pastry crust.

Bake the Tarts

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown, then rotate and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Serve Warm

Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
