Ingredients
For the Bread Layer
- 1 loaf of Challah bread (about 1 pound), cubed
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Apple Layer
- 3 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
For the Egg Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prep
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread Layer
In a large mixing bowl, combine cubed Challah bread, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Toss until evenly coated.
Step 3: Prepare the Apple Layer
In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
Step 4: Assemble the Strata
In the prepared baking dish, create a layer of bread mixture. Arrange half of the apple mixture on top of the bread layer. Sprinkle with half of the melted butter. Repeat this process, ending with a layer of bread.
Step 5: Prepare the Egg Mixture
Whisk together eggs, heavy cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Step 6: Pour the Egg Mixture
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top of the strata. Make sure all bread and apple layers are coated.
Step 7: Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes or until golden brown, puffed, and set. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving warm.
Variations
- Substitute chopped walnuts for some of the bread cubes for added crunch.
- Use a mixture of Granny Smith and Gala apples for contrasting sweetness levels.
- Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top of each slice before serving.
