Servings
4-6 people
Ingredients
For the crust
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
For the filling
- 2 large apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp nutmeg
For the crumble topping
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
Make the crust
Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add cold butter and use a pastry blender or fingers to work it into the flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Mix in water
Gradually pour in ice-cold water while stirring with a fork until dough comes together in a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Prepare the filling
In a separate large bowl, combine sliced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Mix until apples are evenly coated.
Assemble the galette
Roll out chilled dough on lightly floured surface to an approximate diameter of 12-15 inches. Arrange apple mixture in center of dough, leaving about a 2-inch border around edges.
Fold the crust over filling, pressing gently to seal any gaps. Brush crust with a beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
Make the crumble topping
In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, cold butter, and cinnamon. Use your fingers or a pastry blender until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Sprinkle evenly over top of galette.
Bake the galette
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Remove from oven and let cool on wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.
