Caramel Apple Pie

Overview

A delicious twist on the classic apple pie, this recipe features tender apples, a flaky crust, and a rich caramel sauce. Perfect for fall and winter seasons.

Ingredients

  • For the Crust:
    • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
    • 1/4 cup ice water
  • For the Filling:
    • 6-8 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith works well)
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Crust

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  2. Add cold butter and use a pastry blender to break it down into small pieces.
  3. Gradually add ice water while stirring with a fork until dough comes together in a ball.
  4. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. In another large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. Toss until apples are evenly coated with dry ingredients.

Step 3: Assemble and Bake the Pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  3. Place the dough into a 9-inch pie dish, trimming any excess from the edges.
  4. Fill the pie crust with the apple mixture.
  5. Roll out the remaining dough to make a top crust or use a pastry cutter for a decorative edge.
  6. Bake the pie for 40-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and apples are tender.

Step 4: Make the Caramel Sauce

  1. Combine heavy cream, granulated sugar, and unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir occasionally until the mixture thickens slightly and turns a deep amber color.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Allow the pie to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  2. Drizzle caramel sauce over the top of each slice, if desired.
  3. Enjoy your delicious Caramel Apple Pie!
