Caramel Apple Galette with Pecan Crust
Ingredients
For the Crust:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
For the Filling:
- 6-8 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought)
Instructions
Make the Crust:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt.
- Add the chopped pecans, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cold butter to the dry ingredients.
- Use a pastry blender or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9-inch (23cm) tart pan with a removable bottom.
Prepare the Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
- Pour the caramel sauce over the apple mixture and toss until the apples are well-coated.
Assemble and Bake:
- Arrange the apple mixture in a spiral pattern on top of the pecan crust.
- Fold the edges of the crust up over the filling, pressing gently to seal.
- Brush the crust with a little bit of milk or beaten egg for a golden glaze.
- Bake the galette for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Allow the galette to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Tips
- To make the caramel sauce from scratch, combine 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 1 tablespoon unsalted butter in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce turns a deep amber color.
- If using store-bought caramel sauce, be sure to choose a high-quality brand that's free from added preservatives or flavorings.
Variations
- To add an extra layer of flavor, sprinkle a handful of chopped pecans over the apple mixture before baking.
- Consider serving the galette with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a decadent dessert.
