Caramel Apple Crumble Pie

A twist on the classic apple crumble, this pie combines the sweetness of caramel with the crunch of oat topping.

Caramel Apple Crumble Pie

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds mixed apples (Granny Smith and Gala)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (see note)
  • Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes, until the apples start to release their juice.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-inch pie dish.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the oats, light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, and melted butter until crumbly.
  5. Spread the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
  6. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the oat mixture.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • To make the caramel sauce, combine equal parts heavy cream and sugar in a saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 350°F on a candy thermometer.
  • If using store-bought caramel sauce, use according to package instructions.
