Caramel Apple Crumble Pie
Ingredients
- 2 pounds mixed apples (Granny Smith and Gala)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup caramel sauce (see note)
- Confectioners' sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes, until the apples start to release their juice.
- Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-inch pie dish.
- In another bowl, mix together the oats, light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, and melted butter until crumbly.
- Spread the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the oat mixture.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
- To make the caramel sauce, combine equal parts heavy cream and sugar in a saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 350°F on a candy thermometer.
- If using store-bought caramel sauce, use according to package instructions.
