Apple and Pecan Crumble Bars

A twist on traditional apple crumble, these bars feature a layer of caramelized apples and toasted pecans topped with a crunchy oat and brown sugar crust.

Apple and Pecan Crumble Bars

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds mixed apples (Gala, Granny Smith), peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

Make the Crust

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the oats, brown sugar, flour, and salt. Add the cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry blender to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Prepare the Apples

  • In a separate large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated with the dry mixture.
  • Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the top of the apple mixture.

Make the Crumble

  • In the same medium bowl used for the crust, combine the crumbly mixture and a pinch of salt. Mix until well combined.

Assemble and Bake

  • Evenly distribute the crumble mixture on top of the apples.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely in the pan.
  • Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving.
