Apple Cinnamon Swirl Buns

Soft and fluffy buns filled with sweet apple cinnamon filling and topped with a crunchy sugar crust.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Apple cinnamon filling:
    • 1 large apple, peeled and grated
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Confectioners' sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Stir to dissolve yeast, then let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-12 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Apple Cinnamon Filling

  1. In a small saucepan, combine grated apple, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender and mixture is syrupy.

Assembly and Baking

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch (6 mm).
  3. Spread apple cinnamon filling evenly over the center of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on either side.
  4. Fold one long edge of dough over filling, then fold in the other edges, making sure to seal the buns well.
  5. Place buns on prepared baking sheets and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Glaze

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
  2. Drizzle glaze over warm buns and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
